FORMATTING

There are 3 simple components to formatting: headings, narrative description and dialogue.

 Headings
 Master Scene Headings
  • Camera location (Exterior EXT.  or Interior INT.)
  • Scene Location
  • Time (DAY or NIGHT)

Narrative Description.
Narrative, here means story. It consists of three fundamental factors:
  • Action
  • Setting and Character (visual images)
  • Sounds

Dialogue
The dialogue consists of three parts:
  • The character cue, or name of the person speaking, which always appears in CAPS.
  • The Actor's direction. (This is optional.)
  • The character's dialogue.
KEY to Diagram -  PINK is Headings, BLUE is Dialogue and YELLOW is Narrative Description

OTHER SCREENPLAY TERMS

Voice Over  (V.O.)
A voice that speaks over the action, as in a narrative voice such as the thoughts of a person.
Fade In
A visual that slowly emerges to clarity.
Fade Out
A visual that slowly fades to black.
Scene Number
Number your scenes. Each scene is numbered from 1. Scene 'number 1' may last for a couple of pages but it's still called scene 1.
(CON'T)
This is where the character continues talking after action.
